How it works

From survey to handover

  1. Survey

We measure up and check the existing base, the falls and the drainage.

  2. Written quote

Base and surface priced separately, so you can see where the money goes.

  3. Groundwork

Dig out and lay a new porous base, or repair and prime an existing one.

  4. Laying

Mixed and trowelled on a dry, mild day so the resin cures properly.

  5. Handover

Walk on it the same day, drive on it after a day or two. We show you how to look after it.

Planning

Will I need permission?

In England you don't need planning permission to pave a front garden with a permeable surface. You do need it for more than 5m² of non-permeable paving that drains onto the road (Planning Portal).

Resin bound is only permeable when it's laid on a permeable base. Over existing tarmac or concrete, water runs off as it does now. Your quote always says which one you're getting.

In one of the Wirral's conservation areas, check with Wirral Council before changing walls, gates or the front boundary. If you'll drive across the pavement, you also need a dropped kerb, which the council has to approve.

Resin bound or resin bonded?

Resin bound: stone mixed into resin and trowelled smooth. It can be permeable, and it's what most people mean by a resin drive.

Resin bonded: loose stone scattered onto a resin coat. Rougher, not permeable, and loose stones can come away over time.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How long does a resin driveway last?

Laid on a proper base with a UV-stable resin and looked after, a resin bound drive should last many years. Most problems come from a poor base or the wrong resin, not the surface itself.

Can you lay resin in winter?

Resin needs a dry day and mild temperatures to cure properly, so we don't lay it in rain or frost. Winter is a good time to survey and book in for spring.

Is resin bound permeable?

Only when it's laid on a permeable base. Laid over existing tarmac or concrete, it isn't. Your quote will say which one you're getting.

Do I need a dropped kerb?

If you'll drive across the pavement to park, yes. It needs Wirral Council's approval, so apply before the drive is laid.
